Katey Stone, the former head coach of Harvard’s women’s ice hockey team, sued the university Tuesday over allegations of gender bias, unfair pay and retaliation. “This process of investigation, evaluation and scrutiny was rooted in gender bias from the beginning,” said Stone. Stone was the ultra-successful head coach of the program for nearly three decades. She alleges that she was forced out in the spring of last year following multiple investigations into the culture she created within the team. “The coaching profession is losing excellent coaches at an alarming rate as scrutiny grows more intense and biased compared to our male counterparts,” Stone added. Andrew Miltenberg, Stone’s attorney, alleges that the university used one instance as a catalyst to undermine and ultimately force his client out. “Talking to her players, ‘There are too many chiefs on the ice, not enough Indians,'” Miltenberg said. “I think coach stone immediately recognized that that may offend some people.” He added that his client immediately apologized for that comment and suggested that an investigation later concluded the alleged culture did not exist on the hockey team.
